The Greeneville City Schools would like to notify each of you of a NEW Truancy Law. The law T.C.A. code 49-6-3009(c) states that every local board of education shall adopt a Progressive Truancy Plan for students who violate compulsory school attendance requirements prior to filing a truancy petition or a criminal prosecution for educational neglect. Progressive Truancy Intervention Plans must meet the following requirements:
TIER I will occur at the minimum of 2 unexcused absences. 1. Any student accumulating a minimum of 2 unexcused absences will be sent a letter as a preventative measure. 2. School Counseling Services may be made available to the student as needed. 3. Student’s attendance will be monitored on a regular basis.
Tier II will occur at the minimum of 5 unexcused absences. Tier II will be implemented when a student accumulates additional unexcused absences after the 2 Day unexcused absence letter in Tier I has been sent. Tier II will include: 1. An Attendance Contract signed by the parent/guardian or other person having control of the student and an Attendance Supervisor or Designee. The Attendance Contract will include: A. A specific description of the school’s attendance expectations for the student. B. The period for which the contract is in effect C. The consequences for additional absences and alleged school offenses. This may include any disciplinary action and could result in a referral to Juvenile Court. 2. An Individualized Attendance Assessment conducted by Truancy Intervention Specialist and/or a school employee will be completed to identify the barriers causing the students absences. The student may be referred to counseling, community-based services, or other in-school or out-of-school services aimed at addressing the students attendance problems. Tier III will occur at the minimum of 7 unexcused absences. Tier III will be implemented if the truancy interventions under Tier II or unsuccessful. The student may be referred to the Greeneville City Schools Truancy Board. The Truancy Intervention Specialist will notify the parents and/or guardian in writing and/or by phone of the scheduled time and date you are to appear before the Greeneville City Schools Truancy Board.
